Review: The Inconvenient Adventures of Uncle Chestnut

Title
: The Inconvenient Adventures of Uncle Chestnut
Author: Paul Nowak
Pages: 55
Genre: Childrens Chapter Book

The aim of this little book is to introduce readers to the work of G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936) an influential 20th century English writer. It tells fictional stories that are based on events in Chesterton's life. It also conveys lessons that are based on Chesterton's writings. Paul Nowak is inspired by his own love of reading Chesterton and his desire to re-interpret him for young readers of today. The Inconvenient Adventures of Uncle Chestnut consists of four chapters which tell a story of a simple adventure experienced by Uncle Chestnut and his nephew Jack. After these four chapters there is a section with some information about G.K. Chesterton, a glossary of terms, quotes from G.K. Chesterton's writings and an authors note that tells about how he was inspired to write the book. It is intended as the first in a series of Uncle Chestnut books.

I really enjoyed this book and so did my eight year old daughter. It reminded me of the Paddington Bear books by Michael Bond because it is amusing for both adults and children. The dry English humor and the unique perspective of Uncle Chestnut bring to this book a delightful freshness. It is an interesting read whether or not you are familiar with the works of G.K. Chesterton. I found it very easy to imagine myself right there with Jack, trying to understand some of the strange behavior of Uncle Chestnut and not knowing whether to be proud or embarrassed by such a unique relative. The book is narrated by Jack and is told in a simple style that is perfect for children. It is peppered with little bits of wisdom that are grounded in daily life. It is through ordinary events like taking a train ride or babysitting toddlers that G.K. Chestertons ideas about life are revealed. I look forward to Paul Nowak's next installment of Uncle Chestnut.

  1. Thanks for reviewing this book. I had not come across it yet on other blogs, and it sounds like one I would like to have for my son.

  2. I'm with Michael; I haven't heard of this book in my blog rounds. My kids and I love Brit humor so I think we will give this a try, if it is available at my library.

  3. Great. I hope that you all like it. If you don't find it at the library, you should check out the author web site (link at end of review) as they are selling signed copies for $5. They are the first edition that have a few typos - nothing too drastic though.

  4. Nice review! It seems that the childrens books that are becoming available are much more interesting than when my kids were younger.
